At the core of Queen Mary’s mission is the Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI)—a hub designed to drive cross-disciplinary AI research and amplify its global impact. Led by experts in fields ranging from Data Science for Sustainability to Responsible AI and AI in Healthcare, DERI brings together more than 160 Fellows across the University, creating a dynamic ecosystem for innovation.
But our collaborations extend far beyond campus. We are working with industry, government, and academic partners to unlock AI’s potential while addressing its risks and challenges.
A standout example is our AI in Drug Discovery programme, now in its fourth year with UKRI-BBSRC support. Alongside partners such as Recursion, Nxera, and MSD, we are not only advancing cutting-edge research but also training the next generation through 27 PhD studentships.
Our partnership with NVIDIA exemplifies this commitment. Together, we’ve developed a world-leading ultrasound foundation model—trained entirely on publicly available data—setting a new standard for medical image analysis with potential to transform personalised healthcare, including in rheumatoid arthritis. Leveraging the UK’s new Isambard-AI supercomputer, we aim to launch this model later this autumn.
Collaboration also fuels community impact. Earlier this year, we co-hosted the world’s first Children’s AI Summit, where over 100 young people drafted the pioneering Children’s Manifesto for the Future of AI, later presented at the Paris AI Summit.
Within the UK, we are joining forces with Queen Mary Innovation to launch spinouts, with the NHS to improve patient care and reduce waiting times, and through the CREAATIF project to explore Generative AI’s impact on creative workers’ rights.
Looking ahead, our new Centre for Excellence in AI in Education will equip students and educators with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven future, blending world-class research with innovative teaching and employer partnerships.
One message is clear: collaboration is the engine of AI innovation. At Queen Mary, our alliances—from NVIDIA to NHS partners—are not only advancing research but also transforming lives through the power of AI.
